After a year of speculation about whether last night would suffer the same fate as the four previously cancelled San Antonio dates –and the first two stops on his tour– Morrissey actually showed up and kicked off his tour at the Boeing Center at Tech Port in San Antonio.

With no opening act, the crowd sat through a 40-minute-long montage of projected music videos and film clips featuring various cultural touchstones, such as David Bowie and The Runaways, before Morrissey and his band entered through a looped clip of James Baldwin to open with “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out”. Visuals continued throughout the night, interspersed with images of authors and films that have long shaped Morrissey's inner world. Throughout the set, a photograph of Penelope Tree by David Bailey filled the screen behind him.

Between songs, he delivered his signature dry humor: “I bet you heard the good news… well then, what is it?” Shortly after he teased, “I bet you want to hear our new song, but we have to learn it first,” and then pointedly did not play it.

What he did play was a pretty classic set drawing from both his solo catalog, including “Suedehead,” “First of the Gang to Die,” and “Everyday is Like Sunday” and Smiths staples, like “How Soon Is Now?,” “I Know It’s Over,” and the encore” Last Night I dreamt that somebody Loved Me”

After more than 200 cancellations out of 639 scheduled concerts since 2012, according to Consequence of Sound, Morrissey’s arrival in San Antonio felt less like a routine stop and more like a minor miracle. For now, all anyone can do is hope the rest of the tour is graced by his presence in the same way San Antonio was last night.
