REK's Applause for the Cause
Flood Relief Benefit Concert at Whitewater Amphitheater
Photos by Sid Rodriguez-Tovar
Just under two weeks ago, Robert Earl Keen and several top names in country and Americana, like Miranda Lambert, Randy Rogers, and Tyler Childers, to name a few, banded together to lend a helping hand to the Hill Country. With the help of viewers at home and those in attendance, REK’s Applause for the Cause raised over $3 million towards flood relief efforts.
Nestled along a horseshoe portion of the Guadalupe River near Canyon Lake, Whitewater Amphitheater became home to REK's musical brainchild for the night. Quickly filling up as featured artists flew through their sets, the amphitheater was packed as far as the eye could see. Seriously. Trying to walk from the stage to the exit meant traversing through endless waves of country music fans and community members that came together for this monumental event. It's understandable though. It's not always that so many big names in the genre are in the same place at once, let alone performing on the same stage.
In addition to previously mentioned artists, fans were also treated with performances by Vincent Neil Emerson, Jamestown Revival, Radney Foster, Terry Allen and his grandson, Calder, and even Austin City Limit Hall of Fame member Lloyd Maines who was part of the house All Star Band. While there are probably several clips and videos from that night's show, to be there in person was a true reflection of what it means when community comes together, and the magic of music.
