The Cult & Death Cult at the Majestic Theatre

The Cult & Death Cult
at the Majestic Theatre

If you were to guess where this show took place just based on the photos, I doubt your first guess would be the Majestic. This past Tuesday, the historic theatre was home, for the night, to English rock icons The Cult & Death Cult. Attracting a massive crowd of fans, once both iterations of Cult took to the stage, everyone was on their feet. It was as if a giant wave of water had crashed at the front of the stage, causing a backward domino effect of people standing up row by row.

But before we get to that part of the night, we have to make mention of the opening act, Patriarchy. A duo producing intricately crafted post-punk and darkwave music, their performance was quickly appreciated by those in attendance, whether they were fans or not. A musical project born from the mind of LA-based artist Actually Huizenga, they flipped the switch on unsuspecting crowd members, grabbing the almost comically long microphone cable and spinning it above their head, allowing it to lasso around their neck in dramatic fashion. I heard a few audience members behind me yell, "That's badass!" and I couldn't agree more. Giving a personal shout to local venue Paper Tiger and its infamous booker, Berto, it was obvious that we were given a peek into a side of music that is often not seen outside of the St Mary's Strip.

Performing two very different sets of both Death Cult and The Cult's iconic discography, it was hard to deny the impact these two eras of music made on their fans. Although the crowd that evening mostly consisted of an older generation, it was clear that memories of a different time came flooding back. Music does something really special in that it unlocks emotions that often lie buried in the past. This was an especially special show, now that we know this tour will be Cult's final one for some time. If you missed out on the show, we apologize for the FOMO.
